How to program a Roland TB-303

There are a lot of videos with TB-303's in 'em on YouTube, but none that shows how you actually program one.

The manual is so hard to get through, it's best someone shows you.

Evolver + Korg Triton + Korg microX + Roland MC-307

Evolver + Korg Triton + Korg microX + Roland MC-307 = vintage sound!

Short improvisation on Evolver DSI, Korg Triton,Korg microX and Roland MC-307.
The Evolver DSI is MIDI triggered by the arpegiator of the Korg microX.

The sound is altered by the video recording software. When live, the sound of Triton and MC-307 is close to the analog.

The Moog Sonic Six [video]

The Moog Sonic Six is an an outgrowth of Moog's expansion in the early seventies, when it took over a smaller company called Musonics, which made a synth called the Sonic V.

Moog took the Sonic V design, updated it with more Moog-like features (S-trig, three-stage Minimoog-like envelopes, etc) and released it as the attache-case-mounted Sonic VI.

TipTop Z8000 sequencer

TipTop Boss from Chris Carter on Vimeo.

This is basically just a TipTop Z8000 sequencer controlling a Z-DSP module, a Z2040 VCF & a Z5000 VCDSP module. The audio source is a Boss DR-220E Dr.Rhythm, which is also triggering the Z8000 sequencer from its programmable Trig output. Other modules used were a MFB Dual LFO- to change the direction of the sequencer and a Doepfer Dual VCA modulated by two Doepfer VCOs to add a little ring-mod'ish timbre.

A longer 'audio only' clip is also on Soundcloud:

Gakken SX-150 synth and the BugBrand Weevil synths

Experimental Tribute from Chris Carter on Vimeo.

This is a brief tribute I made to the experimental work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop who recently staged a performance in London, that I couldn't attend. All the sounds and loops originate from the BC8 synth, the Gakken SX-150 synth and the BugBrand Weevil synths. All the effects and processing is done with the Boss pedals. Oh yeah... and I did the whole thing 'upside down'.

A very special Moog

HUMAN NATURE - HOELLENMASCHINE (2009) from Ars Electronica on Vimeo.

The first wiring diagrams for the Max Brand synthesizer by Bob Moog are dated 1957. Over more than 10 years, Moog, then a young engineer, built this unique apparatus on the basis of Max Brand’s ideas. The sole traces left by the composer are in the interface design: two keyboards, 2 band-manuals and four foot pedals! The core components are the two frequency dividers, each with 20 sub-frequencies and a adjustable matrix of 3 blocks, each with 4 x 20 sub-harmonic modules including the first voltage-controlled modules Moog ever built (VCA, VCF, VCO).

MoPho Keyboard Synthesizer DSI [video review]

The Mopho Keyboard is a compact and affordable—but powerful—monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is similar to a single voice of the Prophet '08, but with a couple of twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. We have added two sub-octave generators—one per oscillator—for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk. It features the same semi-weighted keyboard action as the Prophet.

MOTU has released BPM Version 1.5 [video]

MOTU has released BPM Version 1.5, a major update of its rhythm production virtual instrument for Mac and Windows.

The updated offers an expanded sound library and enhanced MIDI controller support.
MOTU BPM retails for $295. Registered users can upgrade to version 1.5 for $79.

Features and specifications:

Beat Box Anthology
BPM 1.5 includes Beat Box Anthology, a comprehensive 4 GB collection of legacy rhythm sounds (over 10,000 samples) from 80 classic drum machines from the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s — iconic rhythm machines from decades past that established the legendary sounds that still drive today’s beats. Users can browse individual samples, kits, and patterns from three categories of devices: classic, analog, and digital, the “classic” category being reserved for machines that attained true cult status, such as the 808 and 909 series. Samples are also organized by type (kick, snare, etc.) for easy browsing.

Roland RE-201 Space Echo

The Roland RE-201 Space Echo is truly a Vintage (1973) piece of music technology with lots of appeal even today. It is a Tape-Echo machine for creating true analog echo effects. The RE-201 is a simple system in which a small loop of tape records an incoming signal and immediately plays the recorded sound back over a couple playback heads before being erased over by new incoming audio. A real analog system with warm, gritty and almost noiseless operation, the Space Echo can provide warm, unpredictable and highly tweakable echo effects [original source: vintagesynth.com]

Feelings beyond art

To be able to create any form of art, you must have feelings.
There is a normal course, a cycle of creation: events > inspiration > feelings > art > feelings > inspiration...

Yamaha CS-80 - video

First time I so a Yamaha CS-80 at my friend's studio and I didn't pay to much attention to it. At that time I was more interested in digital synths.

The impossibly rare the Yamaha Electone EX1 Analog Organ/Synth, is proof that there are still gear finds out there waiting for you:
This is one of only 10 ever made. Chuck rescued this from a church, they had already thrown out the other Speaker! Just stitting down to it for the first time and checking out all the settings on this beast, chuck shows me just a little of what it can do, will have a video tour of this beast when I have the time.
